At Stems Therapy Collective, we are a neurodiverse-affirming and neurodivergent-informed practice, meaning we celebrate and support individuals with a wide range of cognitive, emotional, and developmental differences. We understand that each neurodivergent person is unique, with their own strengths and challenges, and we are here to provide compassionate, evidence-based therapies that help unlock their potential.
Neurodivergence encompasses a broad range of conditions, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and learning disabilities. These conditions affect the brain's development and functioning, and often result in differences in behavior, communication, sensory processing, and learning styles.
Here, we explore some common neurodivergent conditions and how Stems Therapy Collective can help.
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder marked by persistent inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that significantly disrupt a person’s ability to focus and self-regulate.
Symptoms of ADHD may include:
- Inattention: Difficulty staying focused, getting easily distracted, or forgetting tasks.
- Hyperactivity: Constant motion, inability to sit still, excessive talking.
- Impulsivity: Acting without thinking, interrupting others, or saying inappropriate things at the wrong time.
It is important to note that while ADHD is often associated with hyperactivity, not everyone with ADHD is highly active; some may appear quiet but are still struggling with attention issues.
Treatment for ADHD typically includes behavioral interventions, support in organizational skills, medication when appropriate, and therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Therapy, and parent coaching.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental condition characterized by differences in communication, social interaction, and behavior patterns. Individuals with ASD may have sensory sensitivities, engage in repetitive behaviors, or prefer structured routines.
Symptoms of ASD may include:
- Difficulty with social interactions, including reading nonverbal cues or making eye contact.
- Engaging in repetitive behaviors, such as hand-flapping or rocking.
- Strong preferences for routine and difficulty with change.
- Sensory sensitivities (e.g., being bothered by bright lights or certain textures).
Treatment for ASD focuses on improving social and communication skills, managing sensory sensitivities, and enhancing independent functioning. Effective approaches include Occupational Therapy (OT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and social skills training. Stems Therapy Collective emphasizes a strength-based approach that celebrates neurodivergence rather than focusing solely on challenges.
Learning Disabilities
Learning disabilities affect how individuals process and understand information, making academic tasks more difficult. These include conditions like dyslexia (reading difficulties), dyscalculia (math difficulties), and dysgraphia (writing difficulties).
Signs of learning disabilities may include:
- Difficulty reading, writing, or understanding math.
- Struggling to follow instructions or organize thoughts.
- Delayed speech or language development.
- Trouble with memory or retaining new information.
Treatment for learning disabilities often includes individualized educational plans (IEPs), remediation therapy, tutoring, and accommodations such as extra time on tests or alternative formats for assignments. Therapy to improve executive functioning, organizational skills, and confidence can also be beneficial.
Affirming Neurodivergence
At Stems Therapy Collective, we take an affirming approach to neurodivergence. This means we recognize and honor the inherent value of every neurodivergent person. We provide a safe, nonjudgmental space for individuals to explore their identities and experiences.
We are compassion-focused and prioritize creating strong, supportive relationships with both children and their families. Our therapists are trained in humanistic and narrative therapies, which focus on empowering individuals and telling their stories in a way that promotes self-acceptance and healing.
Modalities We Use
- Narrative Therapy: Helps individuals reshape their relationship with their challenges, viewing them as separate from their identity.
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): Used to process past trauma, which may be present in individuals with neurodivergent conditions.
- DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy): Teaches coping skills and emotional regulation, particularly beneficial for those with impulsivity and emotional intensity.
- ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): Aims to help individuals accept their thoughts and feelings while taking committed actions toward living a meaningful life.
