Trauma & PTSD

Trauma can take many forms; whether it’s a single event or prolonged exposure to distressing circumstances. For some, the emotional and psychological impact of trauma lingers long after the event itself. This is where trauma-informed therapy can help. At Stems Therapy Collective, we specialize in helping individuals navigate the profound effects of trauma, including issues such as PTSD, anxiety, self-harm, and relationship difficulties.

What is PTSD?

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after someone has experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. PTSD is often associated with combat veterans, but anyone can experience trauma, regardless of age, gender, or background. PTSD can result from a range of distressing events, such as natural disasters, accidents, violent assaults, or childhood abuse.

Individuals with PTSD may experience a variety of symptoms, including:
  • Flashbacks or vivid, distressing memories of the traumatic event
  • Nightmares that relive the trauma
  • Intense emotions like fear, anger, sadness, or detachment
  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations that trigger memories of the trauma
  • Hyperarousal, such as being easily startled, feeling tense or “on edge,” or having trouble sleeping
  • Feeling disconnected from others, which can lead to isolation

These symptoms can severely impact an individual’s sense of safety and control, making it feel impossible to move forward. However, it is important to know that healing is possible, and at Stems Therapy Collective, we provide a safe, compassionate environment where trauma can be addressed and processed.

How Can Stems Therapy Collective Help?

At Stems Therapy Collective, we understand that trauma affects each person in unique ways. We take a trauma-informed approach to therapy, which means that we prioritize your safety, dignity, and autonomy. We offer a range of evidence-based treatments tailored to your specific needs, so you can heal at your own pace and on your terms.

There are several therapeutic approaches that have been shown to be highly effective in treating trauma and PTSD. Our experienced therapists are trained in these modalities and use them to help clients regain a sense of control, safety, and emotional well-being:

  1. Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): CPT helps individuals with PTSD identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs about their trauma. In this therapy, clients work through “stuck points” (thoughts or beliefs that prevent healing) and reframe their responses to the trauma. This helps reduce distress and move toward emotional healing.

  2. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as side-to-side eye movements) to help the brain process difficult memories and emotions related to trauma. This technique helps integrate the traumatic memory, reducing its emotional charge and allowing the person to move forward with greater peace.

  3. Internal Family Systems (IFS): IFS is a therapy that helps individuals address the different "parts" of themselves that may have been affected by trauma. By understanding and healing these parts, clients can achieve greater self-compassion, coherence, and emotional balance.

  4. Brain-spotting is a powerful therapy that helps clients access and process trauma stored in the brain. It involves identifying specific spots in the visual field that are linked to emotional or physical pain, allowing clients to process deeply held trauma in a safe and controlled environment.
